Lilian Orero

Founder | SafeOnline Women Kenya (SOW-Kenya)

Lilian Olivia Orero is a lawyer and advocate of the High Court of Kenya, specializing in gender, technology, and law, with a particular focus on cybersecurity, women’s online safety, and addressing gender bias in AI across Sub-Saharan Africa. As the founder of SafeOnline Women Kenya (SOW-Kenya), Orero has driven significant innovations, including the creation of the SafeHer mobile app and extensive digital literacy programs for grassroots communities. She received the Chevening Scholarship for a master’s in law, innovation, and technology at the University of Bristol, was named a 2023 Mandela Washington Fellow, and served as a 2023–2024 Datasphere Initiative Fellow. Orero’s influential voice has been showcased at major global events, such as AI Connect II, hosted by the US Department of State and the Atlantic Council GeoTech Center, where she focused on “Human-centered AI.” She was also featured on BBC News World Service discussing women and online safety. Additional notable recognitions include presenting at the Data for Policy Conference at Imperial College London and being named one of the “10 Changemakers to Watch” by the UNA-UK Magazine. Her contributions extend to speaking at UNESCO’s event on “Gender Perspectives on AI and the Rule of Law in Africa,” presenting before ambassadors from Finland, Japan, Sweden, and Zambia, and receiving the Mozilla Foundation’s Africa Innovation Mradi program Travel Grant for the Digital Rights and Inclusion Forum. Orero also earned the Women of the South Speak (WOSSO) Fellowship and the Ban Ki-moon Centre Global Citizen Scholarship SDG Micro Project. As the youngest Civil Society Regional Reference Group Member for UN Women, Orero advises the African Union Commission, European Union, and UN agencies on the Spotlight Initiative Africa Regional Program. Her leadership is further demonstrated through her work with Media Defence, IREX, and participation in high-level summits such as the One Young World Summit, solidifying her role as a key advocate for digital rights and gender equity.
