A Right to Reality: Human Dignity and Generative AI

Generative artificial intelligence presents many risks and challenges, which, to date, cannot be fully articulated within any existing vocabulary. This article explores these challenges through the lens of human dignity as a contribution to the ongoing discussion on the limitations of human rights law in the digital age by foregrounding the human interests at stake. A dignitarian lens enables the identification of these interests — itself a worldmaking activity — allowing us to articulate the basic concerns necessary for building the kind of world where humans and machines can coexist.
