SUMMARY:Hidden Harms: How Student Activity Monitoring Increases Risk of Discipline and Police Contact | Center for Democracy and Technology
DESCRIPTION:Join CDT\, CLASP\, and I Vote for Me for a conversation on how monitoring programs increase disciplinary action and law enforcement contact. \nDate: November 17\, 2022\nTime: 2 PM – 3 PM EST \n** Recording here. \nIn recent years\, a number of stories have come out related to how student activity monitoring has been used for disciplinary purposes in schools across the United States. Much of this reporting has also shed light on how these tools bring students into unwanted contact with law enforcement. While these programs pose a risk to learners of all backgrounds\, research has indicated that students from historically marginalized communities are more likely to be harmed by software for surveillance. \nHow can policymakers\, as well as administrators\, reverse this trend and support all learners? Elizabeth Laird and Cody Venzke of CDT\, as well as Clarence Okoh of the Center for Law and Social Policy (CLASP) and Lorraine Wright of I Vote for Me\, will explore how safeguards can be put into place to make school safer for students of all backgrounds. We hope you will join this vital conversation. \n\n\n[…]

SUMMARY:Wastewater Surveillance Technology: Health\, Social\, and Ethical Perspectives | Harvard University
DESCRIPTION:Can AI be a Force for Global Public Health? \nFrom the Covid-19 pandemic to more recent outbreaks of Monkeypox and Poliovirus\, wastewater surveillance technologies and their data have demonstrated the potential to become supporting tools used in steering states and governmental efforts worldwide\, in predicting and tracking disease outbreaks. These tools are also being used to manage the spread of infectious diseases and their variants\, as well as institutional decision-making on the distribution of health resources\, including testing and vaccines. However\, with the promise of new technologies comes their associated pitfalls and risks. Not considering these challenges can deeply erode public trust\, trigger detrimental societal effects\, and violate rights and liberties. \n[…]

SUMMARY:2022 HAI Fall Conference on AI in the Loop: Humans in Charge | Stanford University
DESCRIPTION:Human-in-the-loop artificial intelligence generally refers to AI where humans are involved at various points throughout the research\, design\, training\, testing or decision making process. During this conference\, we hope to challenge participants to rethink this phrase and consider a future where humans remain at the center of all AI technologies. AI should effectively communicate and collaborate with people to augment their capabilities and make their lives better and more enjoyable. Humans are not simply “in-the-loop.” Humans are in charge; AI is “in-the-loop.” \nMore information about speakers and registration will be added shortly.

SUMMARY:The Scarlet E: Balancing Eviction Record Sealing and Data Access | New America
DESCRIPTION:In the last few years\, at least eight states have passed eviction record sealing laws\, and eviction sealing legislation is being considered in several other cities and states across the country. These laws protect tenants by limiting the ability of tenant screening companies to access eviction filing data and sell it to landlords\, locking tenants – even those who ultimately had their eviction cases dismissed – out of future housing opportunities. \nAt the same time\, eviction sealing laws can obscure access to court records\, which are the primary data source for tracking evictions and informing policies to prevent them. \nJoin the Future of Land and Housing Program at New America to discuss the wave of eviction record sealing legislation gaining traction across the country\, and hear from local stakeholders at the forefront of finding ways to preserve access to court data for the public good while still protecting tenants.

SUMMARY:85th Annual Meeting | Association for Information Science and Technology
DESCRIPTION:Information plays a pivotal role for the good of society. However\, we live in an information environment where the lines between true and false\, and interest-driven and balanced content are blurred. This\, coupled with the constant information overload\, places enormous demands on people. With the United Nations having declared the information situation around the Corona pandemic an “infodemic”\, and with a flood of misinformation and disinformation\, there is a great need to create a resilient information environment for the future. Integrity\, quality\, and reliability are critical factors in making information an asset rather than a liability to society. \nWith its unique focus on information\, people\, and technology\, information science is at the forefront of conceptualizing\, developing\, and implementing solutions for a future information environment that not only reacts to crises\, but also helps protect society from future information crises. Quality information can play a central role in helping people spring back after crises but also in dealing with or averting them. \nAs the premier international conference in the field\, the ASIS&T Annual Meeting is a forum to assist in addressing these issues as we continue to push forward the positive contributions of information and technology. \nThe 2022 ASIS&T Annual Meeting will be a fully in-person meeting without virtual attendance or presentation options. There will be satellite events (poster sessions and workshops) that will be held virtually in early October prior to the Annual Meeting.

SUMMARY:Opening Reception for "Selective Attention: Interventions into the Computational Gaze" | Annenberg
DESCRIPTION:Algorithms and computation are driving more and more of our daily decision-making processes than ever before. The digital\, in many ways\, can almost be considered a filter: guiding the choices we make and the opportunities we are allowed to see\, rendering certain practices hypervisible and “natural” while obscuring others. \nThis exhibition features three artists with deep connections to Philadelphia\, who surface tensions between what is visible to the computer eye and what we are able to see and interpret as human beings. The work asks the viewer to consider how the intervention of the digital into practices that have traditionally centered human vision changes the way we see\, interpret and understand — and\, by the same token\, what could be possible if humans insisted on claiming their own gaze within processes that attempt to exclude them altogether. \nThis exhibition was organized by Roopa Vasudevan\, Annenberg PhD candidate and Center for Media at Risk Steering Committee member. \n\n\n\n[…]

SUMMARY:Big Brother Meets Bedlam: Resisting Mental Health Surveillance Tech | Center for Democracy and Technology
DESCRIPTION:In 2017\, the FDA approved Abilify MyCite\, a psychotropic medication that tracks whether a person has actually taken their pills and can send that data to their doctor. Policymakers routinely advocate for expanding and increasing surveillance over and institutionalisation of people with mental health disabilities. \nThe growing use of predictive policing tools and other surveillance technologies at school\, at home\, and in the workplace has led to a rush among researchers and developers to create new algorithms that can even assess or predict a diagnosis of mental illness. People with psychosocial disabilities have long advocated for self-determination\, community-based services and treatment\, and resistance to surveillance as a means of exercising paternalistic control or advancing public safety. \n\n\n[…]

SUMMARY:D4BL III - D4BL
DESCRIPTION:During our first two conferences\, we brought together people to envision a world where data was no longer a weapon but a powerful tool to promote self-determination\, build generational wealth\, develop resilience and resistance to environmental catastrophe\, and anchor a future where Black lives truly do matter. \n\nThis year\, through panel discussions\, workshops\, live performances and a range of multi-modal experiences\, we will be charting a new future for the role that data can and should play in the lives of Black people. We are hosting D4BL III at the Lincoln Center for the Performing Arts because we know that to change the role that data plays in our lives is to also change culture. \nWill you join us this fall? RSVP and let us know if you can make it. Tickets will go on sale in July\, so please note that this is not your official registration. Stay tuned for this announcement and details about speakers\, logistics\, and the official conference agenda. \nWe are also inviting submissions for workshops\, please share your visions with us here.

SUMMARY:Public Benefits Tech Advocacy Hub: An Introduction
DESCRIPTION:Technology is causing real harm for people in the form of public benefits cuts\, denials\, and terminations. The new Benefits Tech Advocacy Hub offers practical tools to support immediate fights against harmful benefits tech and is building a community to collectively strategize and change the way that benefits tech is implemented. Join us for a walkthrough of the new Benefits Tech Advocacy Hub. During the webinar we’ll: \n– Share the goals of the project\,\n– Highlight the resources we’ve developed to help legal services attorneys identify and\naddress issues with benefits technology\,\n– Explain how advocates\, technologists\, and others can become part of the community; and\n– Use a successful advocacy example from Missouri about intervening early in technology changes for Medicaid services to explore the Hub’s identification of advocacy points in the public benefits tech lifecycle and associated resources. \nWe will reserve time for Q&A.

SUMMARY:System Error: Where Big Tech Went Wrong and How We Can Reboot | A Species Between Worlds
DESCRIPTION:System Error exposes the root of our current predicament: how big tech’s relentless focus on optimization is driving a future that reinforces discrimination\, erodes privacy\, displaces workers\, and pollutes the information we get. This optimization mindset substitutes what companies care about for the values that we as a democratic society might choose to prioritize. Well-intentioned optimizers fail to measure all that is meaningful and\, when their creative disruptions achieve great scale\, they impose their values upon the rest of us. Armed with an understanding of how technologists think and exercise their power\, three Stanford professors—a philosopher working at the intersection of tech and ethics\, a political scientist who served under Obama\, and the director of the undergraduate Computer Science program at Stanford (also an early Google engineer)—reveal how we can hold that power to account. \n[…]

SUMMARY:International Data Power Conference
DESCRIPTION:The Data Power Conference hosts critical reflections on data’s power and the social\, political\, economic and cultural consequences of data’s increasing presence in our lives\, workplaces\, and societies. The most recent conference in 2019 focused on the specific theme of global in/security. The 4th Data Power Conference\, in June 2022\, returns to some of the fundamental questions that underpinned the founding of the conference. It is conceived as a series of dialogues\, dialogues about over-arching concerns and with disciplines and stakeholders working with and on data. In particular\, the conference will reflect on: \n\nHow can stakeholders be engaged in critical conversations about data power?\nWhat constitute rigorous methods when it comes to researching data power?\nTo what extent does critical data power research need to focus on specific instances of data power in action? What contributions can more generalised critiques make to our field?\n\nTo facilitate dialogues across disciplines and with stakeholders\, we welcome papers from interdisciplinary teams including disciplines incorporating aspects of data science\, and papers which incorporate non-academic collaborators from a range of sectors.
